Aptronym – the name for it! I’ve always been interested in names – where they come from, how they were formed, what meaning they convey. And I’ve always thought that people with certain surnames had no real choice in occupation.
I mean, could Brian Thorn be anything but a florist? Our friend Tony Dean is head of one of the colleges at the Colorado School of Mines – making him Dean Dean. There’s a real estate company in NC called Buyers & Sellers, owned by Christine Buyers and Herb Sellers. This list goes on.
And now I know there is a name for it – aptronyms. It means last names that are occupational. Thanks to Brian Christian in The Most Human Human for the label. Finally, I have a name for it!
