In 1982, Prof. Ong published Orality and Literacy in which he says:
Literacy “is absolutely necessary for the development not only of science but also of history, philosophy, explicative understanding of literature and of any art, and indeed for the explanation of language (including oral speech) itself.” He goes on to say, “Writing heightens consciousness.”
When I teach essay writing, I always tell my class that, if each of them wants to be a better writer, there are ten words they need to implement. Those ten words are: read, read, read, read, read and write, write, write, write, write.
Now I have scientific basis for it!
